Benefits of Gastric Bypass Surgery
Morbidly obese people can get relieved of their excess weight if they go for Gastric Bypass Surgery. The most preferred gastric bypass surgery is also known as Roux-en-Y.Before dwelling into the benefits of Gastric Bypass Surgery let's try to understand what exactly is done during this surgery. The surgeon tries to restrict how much your stomach can hold, the amount of food in our stomach impacts how the calories are absorbed
HOW COMMON ARE THEY?
An Incisional Hernia is a hernia that occurs through a previously made incision in the abdominal wall, ie the scar left from a previous surgical operation. The incision will have been made in order to get to an internal organ such as the appendix, or a caesarian section.
ARE INCISIONAL HERNIAS DANGEROUS?
As with all hernias, if the hernia strangulates, i.e. the hernia contents (the intestine) get trapped and lose their blood supply, which is very dangerous.
WHY DO THEY OCCUR?
This is the most common hernia(about 70% of all hernias are inguinal hernias). They occur in the groin, the small area of the lower abdomen on each side just above the line separating the abdomen and the legs, and around the pubic bone.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE AN INGUINAL HERNIA?
You may see or feel a lump, bulge or swelling under the skin. It may be a bit uncomfortable. The swelling will often disappear completely when you lie down, as the contents of the hernia sac slip back through the hole into the abdomen. It may also be aggravated by coughing, sneezing, etc.
WHAT SHOULD I DO?
See a doctor to confirm the diagnosis. The doctor will examine you (normally very simply) to confirm and will refer you to see a surgeon, ideally one who specialises in hernia.
WHAT IS KEYHOLE SURGERY?
Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair uses an instrument called a laparoscope. Between two and four small incisions are made through the abdominal wall through which are passed the laparoscope (a thin telescope with a light on the end) and surgical instruments into the abdomen.
SO WHEN WOULD KEYHOLE HERNIA SURGERY BE RECOMMENDED?
If there has been a previous failed open repair, particularly if mesh was used 'unsuccessfully' or perhaps, inexpertly. In certain incisional hernia cases where laparoscopy is deemed more appropriate
DISADVANTAGES OF KEYHOLE HERNIA SURGERY
It is technically demanding for the surgeon. What that really means is that its difficult to learn and difficult to do well. He has to practice a great deal and perform a large number to become really good at it.
PAIN AFTER KEYHOLE SURGERY
In practice and depending upon how it is performed, you can get quite a lot of pain after a laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair, because the pain does not come from the skin cut anyway. The pain is more likely to be related to the fact that the deep tissues have been cut and pulled, and staples may have been used to fix the mesh.
